Bird Photography Hides

Small-group hide-based bird photography

-1-2.jpg

The lagoons, vineyards, and open plains just over an hour from Madrid are home to some of Spain’s most exciting birdlife.

This region is famous for its raptors, colourful species, and a remarkable diversity of habitats within a short driving radius.

Purpose-built hides. Some on land, some water-based give photographers excellent opportunities to capture species in beautiful early-morning and late-afternoon light.

From hovering kestrels to imperial eagles, from rollers to owls, every session brings a new surprise.

A relaxed journey of patience, stillness, and unforgettable encounters in Spain’s hidden birding paradise.

What Makes This Trip Special

-8.jpg

Just 1 hour and 15 minutes from Madrid, this area of lagoons and vineyards offers wonderful hide-based bird photography.

With more than twenty well-placed hides. Some on land, some overlooking the water you have lovely opportunities in the soft morning and afternoon light.

We may see species such as Marsh Harrier, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle, Hoopoe, Little Owl, Flamingo, Kingfisher, Eurasian Roller, and many more.

Every session is different, and that unpredictability is part of the experience.

Access is easy, with short walks and several hides adapted for accessible use. A 100–400mm lens works well, and the hides use high-quality glass so there’s no disturbance to the birds.

These small-group trips are led by myself and/or my husband Tom, who is also a wildlife photographer. We’re there throughout to help with settings, technique, and to offer feedback during the quieter moments.

Who Is This Experience For?

This trip is ideal for anyone who loves birds, nature, and the quiet focus of hide photography.

You don’t need to be an expert. Just patient, curious, and keen to enjoy time in a beautiful part of rural Spain.

Whether you’re an experienced photographer or still building confidence, the small group setting allows plenty of personal guidance and space to enjoy each moment.

It suits travellers who appreciate calm days, soft light, and the chance to spend unhurried time observing birds.

If you enjoy learning new techniques, improving your photography, and being fully immersed in a peaceful landscape, this experience is a perfect fit

Where We Stay

Africa Safari-1.jpg

We stay in a comfortable, family-run hotel in a quiet Spanish town just a short drive from the hides.

Rooms are ensuite and air-conditioned, and breakfast is included each morning at the hotel.

Lunches and dinners can be enjoyed at nearby local restaurants with plenty of traditional options.

It’s a relaxed and friendly base, giving you time to rest between sessions, review your photos, and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of the area before heading back out to the hides.

Equipment

A tripod is essential for photographing from the hides, helping to keep your camera steady and ready when the lynx appears.

A zoom lens in the range of 100–400mm works well, with an aperture of f/2.8 or f/4 ideal for lower light.

Bring plenty of memory cards and spare batteries — shooting quietly and being ready for sudden movement makes all the difference.

Light, neutral-coloured clothing is recommended to blend in with the surroundings.

If you’re not sure what to bring, feel free to reach out and I can talk you through it.

Hide Comfort & Facilities

Africa Safari-3.jpg

The hides are practical and designed specifically for photographers, with simple seating and small fans to keep the space comfortable.

They are quiet, well-positioned, and offer excellent views of the birds.

Each hide accommodates a maximum of two people, creating a calm and focused environment.

There are no toilets at the hides, but sessions are planned with this in mind.

They aren’t luxurious, but they provide everything needed for relaxed and rewarding hide photography

If you would like to be part of the next group, feel free to get in touch.

I would be very happy to talk it through with you
